The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal authority that offers a food license to all food business operators (FBO) in India. All the FBOs must follow all the rules and regulations of FSSAI for food quality control.

FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) in India. Here’s a brief overview of the FSSAI registration process:

Determine Eligibility: Ensure that your food business falls under the purview of FSSAI regulations. Most food businesses, including manufacturers, processors, packers, transporters, distributors, retailers, etc., need to obtain FSSAI registration or license. Determine the type of license or registration required for your business.

FSSAI offers three types of licenses:

FSSAI Registration (for small-scale food businesses)
State License (for medium-scale food businesses)
Central License (for large-scale food businesses)
Documentation: Prepare the necessary documents required for registration, which may include:

Identity and address proof of the proprietor/partners/directors
Proof of possession of premises (e.g., rental agreement)
Food safety management plan (for manufacturers and processors)
List of food products to be dealt with
Food safety management system plan (for manufacturers and processors)

Every business that wants to enter in food business required a food license.

There are three categories of Food license

  1. Basic Food registration- FBO likes a wholesaler, distributor, supplier, retailer, food vending establishments, hawkers, club, canteen, Dhaba, hotel, restaurants, and storage with an annual turnover of less than Rs. 12 lahks.
  2. State Food License- FBO likes a wholesaler, distributor, supplier, and retailer, of food vending establishments, hawkers, clubs, canteen, Dhaba, hotels, restaurants, and storage with an annual turnover between 12 Lakh-20 Crore.

State Food License- – FBO likes a wholesaler, distributor, supplier, and retailer, of food vending establishments, hawkers, clubs, canteen, Dhaba, hotels, restaurants, and storage with an annual turnover of Rs.20 crore or more than Rs. 20 crore.

To obtain a food license registration in India, you need to follow the guidelines set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Determine the Type of License Required: FSSAI offers three types of licenses based on the scale and nature of the food business:

FSSAI Registration: For small-scale food businesses with an annual turnover below Rs. 12 lakh.
State License: For medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crore.
Central License: For large-scale food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crore.
